What the outline shows
The map shows the state boundary. The north is the Lake Erie shore, from Toledo to Conneaut, with Sandusky Bay and the islands visible. Northwest of Toledo the Michigan border is a short straight line. The east edge with Pennsylvania is a straight meridian down to the Ohio River, and the rest of the east and the entire south edge is the Ohio River, facing West Virginia and then Kentucky. The west edge with Indiana is a straight line. None of the 88 county borders is shown. Press Capital to mark Columbus in the middle of the state, an easy one to place; Abbreviation writes "OH".
Portrait or landscape
Ohio is about 220 miles from north to south and about 220 miles east to west, one of the most nearly square states. Either orientation prints acceptably. Portrait is a little better because the Ohio River's meanders along the bottom then have more length to trace, and the bottom margin can carry a key. Landscape suits a worksheet with a wide table alongside the map. At both scales the lake shore, the straight Indiana line and the river edge are all clear.
Five classroom exercises
- Trace the Ohio River from the Pennsylvania corner southwest to the Indiana line and mark West Virginia and Kentucky across it.
- Draw the Scioto River from north of Columbus south through the capital to the Ohio at Portsmouth, and the Muskingum joining the Ohio at Marietta.
- Draw the Maumee River from Indiana northeast to Lake Erie at Toledo, and the Cuyahoga reaching the lake at Cleveland.
- Place Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron and Dayton, and mark which are on the lake and which on the Ohio River.
- Draw the divide across northern Ohio between streams that flow to Lake Erie and streams that flow to the Ohio River.
How to recognise the Ohio outline
- A rough square with a flat top edge (the lake) and a wavy bottom-right edge (the river).
- A straight left edge and a straight upper-right edge meeting the river at a sharp angle.
- The bottom-left corner sits lower than the bottom-right, so the river edge slopes.
- Lake Erie's shore bulges slightly outward in the middle near Sandusky.
