Tips for learning the map
- Learn in blocks. The Northeast is the hardest region because nine states fit where Colorado alone would. Do the Northeast quiz until it is automatic.
- Use anchors: the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and the straight-edged states of the plains (the Dakotas, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming) give you fixed reference points.
- Pair look-alikes: Vermont/New Hampshire (V points down like a V, NH is wider at the bottom), Mississippi/Alabama, Kansas/Nebraska.
- Print the blank map and label it from memory once a day for a week.
