Reading the map

States are drawn from Census Bureau boundary files at 1:20,000,000 scale, which is why coastlines are simplified. Labels sit at each state's approximate geographic center; for irregular states such as Florida, Michigan and Maryland the label is placed on the largest landmass rather than the mathematical centroid.

The default projection is Web Mercator, the same one used by most online maps. It exaggerates area at high latitudes: Alaska looks much larger than it is relative to Texas. Alaska is about 2.5 times the size of Texas, not 4 times.
