US regions map
The standard grouping used by the Census Bureau and most schoolbooks: Northeast, Midwest, South and West, each divided into two or three divisions.

Other regional groupings
The Census scheme is official but not the only one in use. Pages for other common groupings:
- New England — the six states from Maine to Connecticut.
- Mid-Atlantic — NY, NJ, PA, and often DE, MD, DC, VA.
- Southeast — usually the South Atlantic plus AL, MS, TN, KY, AR, LA.
- Southwest — AZ, NM, and often TX, OK, NV, UT, CO.
- Pacific Northwest — WA, OR, sometimes ID.
- Great Plains — the Dakotas, NE, KS, OK, and parts of neighbors.
- Rocky Mountain states — MT, ID, WY, CO, UT, NV, NM.
- Great Lakes states — MN, WI, IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, NY.
- Gulf Coast — TX, LA, MS, AL, FL.
Why Delaware and Maryland are "South"
The Census regions were fixed in 1950 and largely follow the Mason–Dixon line and the Ohio River. Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia fall in the South Atlantic division for that reason, even though culturally many consider them Mid-Atlantic. Likewise Missouri and Kansas are Midwest despite ties to the South and Plains.
