What prints
Hawaii prints as a chain of islands running from northwest to southeast across about 350 miles of ocean, so most of the sheet is water. The eight main islands are all drawn: Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui and the island of Hawaiʻi, which alone is bigger than all the others combined. County borders here mostly follow the coastlines, because four of the five counties are groups of whole islands — Kauaʻi County, the City and County of Honolulu, Maui County and Hawaiʻi County — while the fifth, Kalawao on the Kalaupapa peninsula of Molokaʻi, is a tiny enclave that is barely visible at page scale. Honolulu carries the capital star on the south shore of Oʻahu. The Major cities layer adds a handful of the larger towns, though outside Honolulu none is large.
Page orientation
Print in landscape. The island chain is much wider than it is tall, and landscape lets the full chain from Niʻihau to Hawaiʻi stretch across the page. Portrait squeezes the islands into a diagonal band and wastes the top and bottom of the sheet. For a lesson on a single island, zoom in before printing — Oʻahu fits a landscape page on its own and shows Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and the Koʻolau and Waiʻanae ranges at a useful scale.

Hawaii runs on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time all year and does not observe daylight saving, so it is either five or six hours behind the East Coast depending on the season. On the sheet, students can name each island, mark Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaiʻi as the state's highest point, and identify which island belongs to which county. The county map lists the five counties and seats; the blank Hawaii map gives the island outlines with nothing else.
