What prints

Iowa is the only state whose east and west borders are both formed by major rivers, and both show on the print: the Mississippi forms the ragged eastern edge and the Missouri the western one, with the Big Sioux River finishing the northwest corner. Between them the 99 counties print as an almost regular grid of squares, with most counties near 24 miles on a side, a pattern set by the original survey. Des Moines is marked with the capital star in Polk County, near the centre. The Major cities layer adds Cedar Rapids and Iowa City in the east, Davenport on the Mississippi, Sioux City on the Missouri in the northwest, and Waterloo on the Cedar River. The map is drawn as vectors, so even the small counties along the Mississippi bluffs keep sharp edges at any print size.

Page orientation

Iowa is roughly 310 miles east to west and 200 miles north to south, a wide rectangle. Print in landscape. In landscape the state spans nearly the full width of Letter or A4 and the county grid comes out large enough to write a name inside each square. Portrait is workable but the state occupies only the middle third of the page, and the two river borders lose their detail. Turn off any "shrink to fit" option so the line weights print as designed.

What is labeled

County names stay off the page. The regular grid makes Iowa a good state for a counting exercise (count the counties across the top row, then down the west side) and for locating Polk County by the capital star. The Iowa county map lists every county and seat. The blank Iowa map prints only the outline.
