What prints

South Dakota comes out as a wide rectangle with one irregular side. The north (North Dakota), west (Montana and Wyoming) and most of the south (Nebraska) are straight survey lines; the eastern edge with Minnesota and Iowa follows a straight line down to Big Stone Lake and then the Big Sioux River, and the southeastern corner is cut by the Missouri River. All 66 counties print as thin lines. The eastern counties are small and regular; the western ones, such as Meade, Pennington and Butte, are large. Pierre has the capital star on the Missouri near the centre of the state, and the Major cities layer adds Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen and Brookings.

Page orientation

Print in landscape. At about 380 miles wide and about 240 miles tall, South Dakota has almost exactly the proportions of a landscape Letter sheet, so the outline reaches both side margins with the county grid at a comfortable size. In portrait the map drops to little more than half the width of the paper.

Two time zones

South Dakota is split by the Missouri River in practice. East River, including Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Brookings and Pierre, is on Central time. West River, including Rapid City and the Black Hills, is on Mountain time. The legal line follows county boundaries rather than the river exactly, and it is not printed on the sheet; students can draw it with the time zone map alongside.

What is labeled

The Missouri River, its reservoirs and the Black Hills do not print on the plain map. Suggested exercises: draw the Missouri from the North Dakota line to the Nebraska corner, mark Minnehaha County (Sioux Falls) and Pennington County (Rapid City), and label the Black Hills in the southwest. The county map holds the answers, and the blank South Dakota map gives an empty outline.
