Printable cities US map

The twenty-five largest US cities by 2020 city-proper population, each marked with a dot and its name on the state outline map. Eight of the twenty-five are in Texas or California.

Major cities are marked and named. Press Capitals to add the state capitals as well, or Abbreviations to code the states. Anchorage and Honolulu appear in the insets.

What prints

State outlines with a dot and name for each of the 25 largest cities. Some labels crowd: Dallas and Fort Worth are 30 miles apart, Los Angeles and San Diego 120, and Philadelphia, New York and Boston all sit on the same 300-mile stretch of coast. The map places names to avoid overlap, but at Letter size the Texas and California clusters are tight, so print at 100% rather than reducing. State capitals are not shown unless you press Capitals — only Phoenix, Austin, Columbus, Indianapolis, Denver, Nashville, Oklahoma City and Boston are both a capital and one of the 25.

Populations are for the city proper, not the metropolitan area. By metro population the order changes considerably: Miami, Atlanta and Washington move into the top ten and Jacksonville, Fort Worth and Columbus drop out.

Print settings

  1. Press the Print button on the map (or Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). The page switches to a print layout with the map only — no header, navigation or text.
  2. Orientation: Landscape. The contiguous states are about 1.6 times as wide as they are tall, which matches a landscape Letter or A4 sheet almost exactly.
  3. Margins: Default or Minimum. Turn off Headers and footers so the URL and date do not print.
  4. Scale: 100%, or Fit to page if your browser offers it.
  5. To make a PDF instead of a paper copy, choose Save as PDF as the destination.

Exercises

  1. Rank them. On the printed sheet number the cities 1 to 25 from memory, then check against the table.
  2. State count. Write how many of the 25 are in each state: Texas 6 (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso), California 4, then one each for the rest. Thirty-four states have none.
  3. Coast or inland. Circle the cities on an ocean or Gulf coast (New York, Los Angeles, Houston by ship channel, San Diego, Jacksonville, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston) and note that Chicago is on a lake and Denver is a mile above sea level.
  4. Distances. Using the scale (about 1 inch = 250 miles at Letter), measure New York to Los Angeles (about 2,450 miles), Chicago to Houston (about 940) and Seattle to San Diego (about 1,060).
  5. Rivers. Mark the cities on the Mississippi (none in the 25 — Memphis is 28th), the Ohio (Louisville, 29th) and the Missouri (Kansas City, 36th), and ask why the biggest river cities are not the biggest cities.
