Neighbours: Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas. The short Gulf coast lies between Louisiana and Alabama.

What prints

Everything from the Tennessee line at the top to the Gulf of Mexico at the bottom fits on a single sheet. The western border is the wandering course of the Mississippi River against Arkansas and Louisiana; the printed outline follows every oxbow, so students can see how far the river has strayed from a straight line. The eastern border with Alabama is a surveyed line broken by one slight angle, and the southern border with Louisiana turns from the Pearl River to the 31st parallel and back to the Pearl. The 82 counties are drawn as thin lines, Jackson gets the capital marker, and the Major cities layer adds Gulfport on the coast, Southaven at the Tennessee line, Hattiesburg and Biloxi.

Page orientation

Portrait, without question: Mississippi is about 340 miles tall and only about 170 miles wide, the most elongated outline in the Deep South. In landscape the state would occupy a narrow band in the centre of the page with wide blank margins either side. Portrait on Letter paper gives each county roughly the size of a postage stamp, which is enough to distinguish the small Delta counties along the river from the larger ones in the piney woods to the southeast.

What is labeled

The Delta — the flat alluvial plain between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers — is the most useful teaching feature on this map even though it is not outlined: it corresponds roughly to the counties from DeSoto south to Warren along the river. A hand-drawn line from Memphis to Vicksburg along the county borders marks its eastern edge. The blank Mississippi map removes all labels for tests; the county map lists every county with its seat.
