What prints
Missouri's outline prints with its two defining river borders: the Mississippi along the entire eastern edge against Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee, and the Missouri River forming the northwest border with Nebraska and part of Kansas before it turns east across the state to St. Louis. The Bootheel, the rectangular notch that drops south into Arkansas at the bottom-right corner, is the feature students remember. Inside the outline are the 114 county borders plus the boundary of the City of St. Louis, which is independent of any county and counts as the 115th county-equivalent. Jefferson City carries the capital star at the centre of the state on the Missouri River. The Major cities layer places Kansas City on the western border, St. Louis on the eastern, and Springfield in the southwest.

Print in landscape. Missouri is about 300 miles wide and about 280 miles tall (or 240 if you ignore the Bootheel), so it is roughly as broad as it is high, and landscape lets the state fill the page while keeping the Bootheel clear of the bottom margin. In portrait the two big cities end up close to the left and right edges with the county detail small. The counties are fairly uniform in size — there are no extreme outliers like Texas or Arizona — so the map stays readable on Letter paper.

Kansas City is the largest city in the state but is easily confused on a printed sheet with Kansas City, Kansas, directly across the state line; the map only marks the Missouri one.
