What prints

Oklahoma prints as a wide block with the Panhandle jutting 165 miles west from the northwest corner, which is why the state is often compared to a cooking pot or a cleaver. The vector outline follows the Red River along the whole southern border with Texas, the straight 37th-parallel line with Kansas and Colorado in the north, and the short 103°W meridian line with New Mexico at the western end of the Panhandle. All 77 counties print as thin lines; the three Panhandle counties (Cimarron, Texas and Beaver) are the largest and most regular. Oklahoma City is starred as capital near the centre, and the Major cities layer adds Tulsa, Norman, Broken Arrow and Edmond.

Page orientation

Choose landscape. Including the Panhandle, Oklahoma is about 470 miles from east to west and only about 230 miles from north to south. A portrait print would reduce the Panhandle to a thin stub and leave the eastern counties, which are small and crowded around Tulsa, almost unreadable. In landscape the state spans the full width of the sheet.

What is labeled

The Arkansas and Canadian rivers, which cross the state from west to east, are not printed on the plain sheet. County names are also absent, so the print doubles as a worksheet: label Oklahoma County (the capital), Tulsa County and Cleveland County (Norman), or shade the counties that border Texas. Answers are on the Oklahoma county map; a fully empty outline is on the blank Oklahoma map.
