What prints

Because the map zooms to the state, Rhode Island prints at a larger scale than any other state page: the whole state is only about 48 miles from north to south and 37 miles from east to west, yet it fills the sheet. That scale makes the details of Narragansett Bay legible: Aquidneck Island with Newport, Conanicut Island (Jamestown), Prudence Island, and Block Island offshore to the south. The five counties (Providence, Kent, Washington, Bristol and Newport) print as thin lines; note that Rhode Island's counties have no governments and exist only as geographic and court divisions. Providence has the capital star at the head of the bay, and the Major cities layer adds Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket and East Providence, all within a few miles of the capital.

Page orientation

Print in portrait. Rhode Island is taller than it is wide, and portrait lets the bay run down the centre of the page with the western towns on the left and Aquidneck Island on the right. Landscape leaves wide empty margins on both sides and cuts the printed scale by about a third.

What is labeled

Town boundaries, which matter more than counties in Rhode Island, are not printed. Useful exercises at this scale include labeling the three main islands of the bay, marking Newport at the southern end of Aquidneck Island, and shading Providence County, which holds most of the state's population. Check against the Rhode Island county map. The blank Rhode Island map removes the county lines and cities.
