Where Connecticut is

Connecticut is in southern New England, between New York and Rhode Island. It is about 110 miles east to west and 70 miles north to south. Massachusetts lies to the north, Rhode Island to the east, Long Island Sound to the south, and New York to the west. The Connecticut River divides the state down the middle, flowing south through Hartford to the Sound at Old Saybrook. Most of the population lives in the Sound-side corridor from Greenwich through Bridgeport and New Haven to New London, and in the Hartford area; the northwest and northeast corners are hilly and rural.

Geography

• Mount Frissell — the highest ground, 2,380 feet on the south slope near the Massachusetts line (the summit is in Massachusetts); Bear Mountain, 2,316 feet, is the highest peak entirely within the state. Both are in the Appalachian Taconic range.
• Connecticut River — the longest river in New England, crosses the state for about 70 miles from Enfield to Long Island Sound.
• Housatonic and Thames rivers — the Housatonic drains the western hills to the Sound at Stratford; the Thames is a short tidal estuary at New London, fed by the Shetucket and Quinebaug.
• Long Island Sound — about 100 miles of shoreline, sheltered by Long Island; the lowest point is sea level.
• Candlewood Lake — the largest lake, a reservoir near Danbury; Bantam Lake is the largest natural lake.
• Litchfield Hills — the wooded northwest, the highest and least populated part of the state.

Borders

Connecticut has no natural land border. The Massachusetts line is a survey from the 1700s with a notch at Southwick, the "Southwick Jog", where 2.5 square miles of Massachusetts dips south. The Rhode Island line and the New York line are also straight surveys; the New York border includes the narrow Panhandle around Greenwich that reaches south-west toward the city, a legacy of colonial land disputes settled in 1683. The southern boundary in Long Island Sound was fixed by agreement with New York. Connecticut's eight counties have had no county governments since 1960.
