Printable Virginia map
Virginia print sheet, landscape: Richmond, Virginia Beach, the Hampton Roads cities, the Eastern Shore and the borders of 95 counties and 38 independent cities.
What prints
The Virginia sheet is busier than most because the state has two kinds of county-level division. The 95 counties print as the usual grey grid, and the 38 independent cities — Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Alexandria and the rest — print as small separate polygons cut out of the counties around them. That is why the Hampton Roads area in the southeast looks like a cluster of islands, and why the interior has scattered dots where cities like Lynchburg, Roanoke and Charlottesville sit inside their surrounding counties. The Eastern Shore, the sliver of the Delmarva Peninsula across Chesapeake Bay, prints detached from the mainland. Richmond carries the capital star. The Major cities layer adds Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Arlington.
Page orientation
Use landscape. Virginia stretches about 430 miles from the Cumberland Gap in the far southwest to the tip of the Eastern Shore, but only about 200 miles north to south, and the western tail is long and thin. In landscape the state fills the width of a Letter or A4 page. Portrait halves the map and turns the Hampton Roads cities into an unreadable knot. If you need Northern Virginia or Hampton Roads legible, zoom the interactive map to that area first and print the zoomed view.
What is labeled
- VA via the Abbreviations button.
- Richmond, the capital, at the fall line of the James River.
- Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Arlington on the Major cities layer.
- All 95 county borders and the outlines of the 38 independent cities.
- The Potomac River border with Maryland, the straight line with North Carolina along about 36.5°N, and the mountain borders with West Virginia and Kentucky.
Chesapeake Bay and the James, York and Rappahannock rivers are visible only through the gaps they leave in the outline; the water itself prints on the Streets layer. County and city names are not printed. The Virginia county map lists every county, independent city and seat, and the blank Virginia map gives the bare outline.
