Where New York is

New York fills the space between New England and the Great Lakes. From Montauk Point on Long Island to the Pennsylvania line at Lake Erie is about 330 miles; from the Canadian border at Rouses Point to Staten Island is about 310 miles. Clockwise from the north: Quebec along the 45th parallel and Ontario across the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario; Vermont across Lake Champlain and a surveyed line; Massachusetts and Connecticut along surveyed lines to the east; Long Island Sound and the Atlantic; New Jersey across the Hudson and along a surveyed line; and Pennsylvania along the Delaware River and the 42nd parallel to the south, with Lake Erie and the Niagara River to the west. It is the fourth most populous state and 27th by area.

Major cities

New York City alone holds 44 percent of the state's population and is larger than any other US city by more than 4 million. Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk counties add another 2.9 million.

Geography

• Highest point — Mount Marcy, 5,344 ft, in the Adirondack Mountains, which cover most of the northeast. The Adirondacks are geologically separate from the Appalachians; the Catskills to the south are part of them.
• Hudson River — rises at Lake Tear of the Clouds on Marcy and flows 315 miles south past Albany to New York Harbor; it is tidal to Troy. See the Hudson River map.
• Great Lakes — Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, joined by the Niagara River and Niagara Falls. See the Great Lakes map.
• Finger Lakes — eleven long glacial lakes south of Lake Ontario; Seneca and Cayuga are each about 38 miles long. Lake Champlain and Lake George lie on the eastern edge; Oneida Lake is the largest entirely within the state.
• Other rivers — the Mohawk (the Erie Canal route west from Albany), the Delaware and Susquehanna headwaters, the Genesee and the St. Lawrence with the Thousand Islands.
• Coast — Long Island runs 118 miles east from the harbor, with barrier beaches on its Atlantic side. Sea level is the low point.

Borders

The southern border with Pennsylvania follows the Delaware River from Port Jervis northwest to the 42nd parallel, then runs along the parallel to Lake Erie, with a short jog north at the western end so that Pennsylvania reaches the lake. The Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut lines are surveyed, with the Connecticut line notched by the "Oblong" exchange of 1731. The northern border is the 45th parallel with Quebec (surveyed a little north of the true parallel) and the middle of the St. Lawrence, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and Lake Erie with Ontario. New Jersey's border runs from the Delaware to the Hudson, then down the river and through New York Harbor.

Downstate: New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley (Westchester, Rockland, the Mid-Hudson). Upstate: the Capital District around Albany, the Adirondacks and North Country, the Mohawk Valley, Central New York and Syracuse, the Finger Lakes, the Southern Tier along the Pennsylvania line, and Western New York with Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls. The Catskills sit between the Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier.
