Blank Tennessee map
A blank outline of Tennessee, a long parallelogram between eight neighbours. The Mississippi bounds the west and the Appalachian crest the east; the 95 county lines are hidden.
What the outline shows
The map draws the state boundary. The north edge with Kentucky and Virginia is a straight line with several surveying jogs, most visibly near the Tennessee River in the west. The east edge follows the crest of the Appalachians, including the Great Smoky Mountains, against North Carolina. The south edge is the 35th parallel against Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. The west edge is the Mississippi River, facing Arkansas and, at the northwest corner, the Missouri Bootheel. Nothing inside is drawn: no Tennessee River, no Cumberland Plateau, no cities. Press Capital to mark Nashville on the Cumberland River in the north-central part of the state, and Abbreviation for "TN". East Tennessee, roughly east of the Cumberland Plateau, is on Eastern time and the rest on Central.
Portrait or landscape
Tennessee is about 440 miles from Memphis to the North Carolina line and only about 115 miles north to south. That is nearly 4:1. Print in landscape, and expect the outline to fill the width of the page with a wide empty band above and below it; those bands are useful for a key and the answer list. In portrait the state would be a thin strip and unusable. For any one of the three Grand Divisions, zoom in first: each is roughly square and prints either way.
Five classroom exercises
- Draw the Tennessee River in its U shape: from Knoxville southwest to Chattanooga, into Alabama, back north across West Tennessee and out into Kentucky.
- Draw the Cumberland River from Kentucky south through Nashville and back north into Kentucky, and mark Nashville on it.
- Divide the state into East, Middle and West Tennessee along the Cumberland Plateau and the Tennessee River, and mark the Eastern/Central time zone line.
- Trace the Mississippi along the west edge and mark Memphis at the southwest corner, with Arkansas across the river.
- Name all eight neighbouring states in clockwise order starting from Kentucky, and mark the Great Smoky Mountains on the North Carolina line.
How to recognise the Tennessee outline
- A long, low parallelogram, wider than any other eastern state relative to its height.
- A straight bottom edge and a nearly straight top edge with small jogs.
- A wavy left edge (the Mississippi) and a ragged, slanting right edge (the Smokies).
- Eight neighbours, the joint record with Missouri.
