Tennessee on a single Letter or A4 sheet: Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and the 95 county borders, printed in landscape to suit its long east–west shape.
What prints
Tennessee is a parallelogram about 440 miles long and barely 115 miles deep, and the print sheet reproduces that whole span from the Mississippi River at Memphis to the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains on the North Carolina line. Inside the state boundary sit the borders of 95 counties, more than any state except Texas, Georgia, Virginia and Kentucky. Nashville carries the capital star on the Cumberland River. Turning on the Major cities layer adds Memphis in the far southwest corner, Knoxville on the Tennessee River in the east, Chattanooga where the river bends at the Georgia line, and Clarksville near the Kentucky border. The Tennessee River itself, which crosses the state twice, does not appear on the plain print; it shows on the Streets layer only.
One thing worth noting before you print: the state sits in two time zones. Roughly the eastern third, including Knoxville and Chattanooga, keeps Eastern time; Nashville, Memphis and everything west of the Cumberland Plateau keep Central time. The printed map does not draw the zone line, so mark it by hand if a lesson needs it.
Page orientation
Print in landscape. No other choice makes sense for a state that is nearly four times as wide as it is tall. In portrait the outline occupies a thin strip across the middle of the page and the small counties around Nashville and in the eastern valleys blur together. In landscape at 100 percent the state runs almost edge to edge, and even the narrow counties of the Tennessee Valley remain legible.
