What prints
Maine prints as a broad wedge, widest across the north where Aroostook County meets New Brunswick and narrowest at the short New Hampshire line in the southwest. Its 16 counties are few but very uneven: Aroostook, Piscataquis, Somerset and Penobscot in the north are each larger than some states, while the coastal counties are small and fringed with bays and islands. The deeply indented coast, from Kittery to the St. Croix River at the Canadian border, prints with its inlets and the larger islands such as Mount Desert. Augusta has the capital star on the Kennebec River. The Major cities layer adds Portland on Casco Bay, Lewiston and Auburn on the Androscoggin, Bangor on the Penobscot, and South Portland. Vector rendering keeps the ragged coastline sharp, which a bitmap at this scale would blur.
Page orientation
Maine is about 320 miles from Kittery to the northern tip of Aroostook County and about 210 miles across at its widest. Print in portrait. The tall northern block and the southwest-trending coast fit the page shape well, and the small southern counties, where most people live, are not compressed. Landscape leaves the northern forest counties dominating a short, wide image with the coast crowded along the bottom.
