Where New Hampshire is
New Hampshire is the triangular state in northern New England between Vermont and Maine. It is about 180 miles from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts line and about 70 miles across at its widest in the south, tapering to under 20 miles in the north. Clockwise from the north: Quebec along the height of land, Maine to the east (partly along the Salmon Falls and Piscataqua rivers), a short Atlantic coast, Massachusetts along a surveyed line to the south, and Vermont along the Connecticut River to the west. It is the 46th-largest state by area.

Hillsborough and Rockingham counties in the southeast corner hold about half the state's population, within commuting range of Boston.
Geography
- Highest point — Mount Washington, 6,288 ft, the highest peak in the northeastern US, in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Its summit recorded a 231 mph wind gust in 1934.
- White Mountains — part of the Appalachians, covering the northern third of the state; 48 summits exceed 4,000 ft.
- Rivers — the Connecticut (source at the Connecticut Lakes near the Canadian line), the Merrimack through Concord, Manchester and Nashua, the Androscoggin and the Saco.
- Lakes — Lake Winnipesaukee, about 70 sq mi, is the largest; Squam and Newfound lakes lie nearby in the Lakes Region.
- Coast — about 18 miles of Atlantic shoreline between Massachusetts and Maine, with the port of Portsmouth on the Piscataqua estuary. See the coastlines map.
Borders
The western border with Vermont runs along the west bank of the Connecticut River at the low-water mark, so the river itself belongs to New Hampshire; the Supreme Court settled this in 1934. The Massachusetts line is a surveyed line following, at three miles' distance, the course of the Merrimack in its eastern part, then running straight west. The Maine border follows the Piscataqua and Salmon Falls rivers north to the headwaters, then a surveyed line north to the Canadian border. The Canadian boundary follows the watershed divide fixed by the 1842 Webster–Ashburton Treaty.
