Blank Maine map
A blank outline of Maine, the only state that borders exactly one other state. Nearly half the boundary is Canadian, and the rest is a deeply indented Atlantic coast.
What the outline shows
The map shows Maine's outline with nothing inside. The southwest edge is the border with New Hampshire, partly the Salmon Falls and Piscataqua rivers and partly a straight line. The northwest edge is a long, angular line against Quebec following the height of land, and the northeast edge is the Saint John and Saint Croix rivers against New Brunswick. The rest is coast: about 230 miles in a straight line from Kittery to the Canadian border, but several thousand miles if every bay and island is followed. Penobscot Bay, Casco Bay and Mount Desert Island are all visible in the outline. No county borders, rivers, or towns are shown. Capital marks Augusta on the Kennebec River; Abbreviation stamps "ME".
Portrait or landscape
Maine is about 320 miles from Kittery to the northern tip and about 210 miles wide at its widest. Print in portrait. The state's long axis runs from southwest to northeast, so even in portrait the outline leans; there is empty space at the top left and bottom right that can hold a title and a key. Landscape gives a smaller map and pushes the northern tip against the page edge. For the coast alone, zoom to the area from Portland to Eastport and use landscape.
Five classroom exercises
- Draw the Kennebec River from Moosehead Lake south past Augusta to the sea, and the Penobscot from the north woods to Bangor and Penobscot Bay.
- Mark the Saint Croix River at the eastern edge and label the point at West Quoddy Head, the easternmost place in the contiguous states.
- Draw the Saint John River along the northern border and shade Aroostook County, the large square northern part of the state.
- Place Portland, Lewiston, Bangor and Augusta; then mark Mount Katahdin, the northern end of the Appalachian Trail, in the centre of the state.
- Trace the New Hampshire border and note that it is Maine's only state border; label the two countries and one state that touch Maine.
How to recognise the Maine outline
- A large, roughly square northern block with a long tail running southwest along the coast.
- A deeply jagged southeast coast, with bays and islands too many to count.
- A straight-ish northwest edge with several sharp angles against Quebec.
- A short, straight southwest edge against New Hampshire that reaches the sea at Kittery.
