Where Vermont is

Vermont is the only New England state without a coastline, wedged between New York and New Hampshire. It is about 160 miles long from the Canadian border to Massachusetts and narrows from about 90 miles wide in the north to about 40 miles in the south. Clockwise from the north: Quebec along the 45th parallel, New Hampshire along the Connecticut River to the east, Massachusetts along a surveyed line to the south, and New York along a surveyed line and then the middle of Lake Champlain to the west. It was the first state admitted after the original thirteen. It is 45th in area and 49th in population, ahead of only Wyoming.

Major cities

Vermont has only nine incorporated cities; most places are towns. Chittenden County around Burlington holds about a quarter of the state's population. Montpelier, with just over 8,000 people, is the least populous state capital.

Geography

• Highest point — Mount Mansfield, 4,393 ft, in the Green Mountains north of Stowe; Killington Peak (4,229 ft) and Camel's Hump are the other well-known summits.
• Green Mountains — the spine of the state, running its full length as part of the Appalachians; the Long Trail follows the crest for 272 miles.
• Lake Champlain — 120 miles long on the New York border, the largest lake in the Northeast outside the Great Lakes; Grand Isle County occupies its islands. See the lakes map. Its surface, about 95 ft, is the state's low point.
• Connecticut River — the whole eastern border, though the river itself belongs to New Hampshire.
• Other rivers and lakes — the Winooski through Montpelier and Burlington, the Lamoille, Otter Creek (the longest entirely in Vermont), and Lake Memphremagog straddling the Quebec line at Newport. Lake Bomoseen is the largest lake wholly inside the state.
• Taconics and Northeast Kingdom — the Taconic Mountains along the southwestern border and the granite hills of the Northeast Kingdom in Essex, Orleans and Caledonia counties.

Borders

The New Hampshire border is the low-water mark on the west bank of the Connecticut River, fixed by the Supreme Court in 1934, so Vermont's territory ends at the water's edge. The New York border runs along a surveyed line from Massachusetts north to Lake Champlain near Poultney, then through the middle of the lake. The Massachusetts line was surveyed in 1741 and the Canadian border was surveyed a little north of the true 45th parallel, an error confirmed and accepted in the 1842 Webster–Ashburton Treaty; the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line straddles it.
