Blank New Jersey map
A blank outline of New Jersey, a state bounded by water on all but one side. The Delaware River, the Hudson and 130 miles of Atlantic shore make the outline; the 21 counties are hidden.
What the outline shows
The map draws New Jersey's boundary. The west edge is the Delaware River from the northern tip to Delaware Bay, facing Pennsylvania and then Delaware. The south is the bay and Cape May. The east is the Atlantic coast, with barrier islands from Sandy Hook to Cape May, then Raritan Bay, Staten Island's waters, the Hudson River and the short straight line against New York in the north. Only the northern line is a land border. Nothing is drawn inside. Capital marks Trenton on the Delaware River in the west-central part of the state, and Abbreviation stamps "NJ". The Twelve-Mile Circle around New Castle, Delaware, gives Delaware a small piece of the river's east bank; that detail is visible if you zoom in.
Portrait or landscape
New Jersey is about 170 miles from High Point to Cape May and about 70 miles wide at the widest. Print in portrait. The state runs almost straight north–south and fills the page height with room beside it for labels. In landscape it would be small and turned sideways. The narrow waist between Trenton and Raritan Bay, about 30 miles wide, is easy to see at portrait scale and makes a useful marker for splitting the state into north and south.
Five classroom exercises
- Trace the Delaware River along the west edge and mark Pennsylvania and Delaware across it; then mark the Delaware Water Gap at the northwest corner.
- Draw the barrier islands and Atlantic coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May, and mark Atlantic City about two thirds of the way down.
- Place Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth and Trenton, and mark which of them sit on the Hudson or Newark Bay.
- Shade the Pine Barrens across the south-central part of the state, and mark the Raritan River flowing east to Raritan Bay.
- Draw the straight New York border in the north from the Delaware River to the Hudson, and label the Palisades along the Hudson.
How to recognise the New Jersey outline
- A tall shape with a narrow waist, often compared to a seahorse or a figure standing sideways.
- A wavy left edge (the Delaware River) and a nearly straight right coast with a thin line of barrier islands.
- A sharp southern point, Cape May, between the ocean and Delaware Bay.
- A short straight top edge, the only land border, running diagonally.
