What prints
Vermont is small and tall, about 160 miles from the Canadian line to the Massachusetts border and between 40 and 90 miles wide, and it prints large. At Letter size the whole state fills the page with the 14 county borders comfortably spaced. The ragged eastern edge follows the Connecticut River, the straighter western edge follows Lake Champlain for about 100 miles, and the northern edge is the surveyed 45th parallel. Montpelier, with fewer than 8,000 residents the smallest state capital in the country, is marked with the capital star. Burlington, the largest city, appears on the Major cities layer along with South Burlington and Rutland.
Page orientation
Portrait, without question. The state is roughly twice as tall as it is wide, and in portrait the outline nearly spans the page top to bottom. Landscape shrinks it to less than half the width of the sheet. Since Vermont prints so large, this is one of the states where even the county lines can be labeled by hand on a Letter sheet: Chittenden around Burlington, Washington around Montpelier, Rutland and Windsor in the south all have room for a written name.

Lake Champlain itself is drawn only as the state border on the plain print; the lake surface and the Green Mountains show on the Streets layer. For an exercise, ask students to draw the spine of the Green Mountains from north to south and mark Mount Mansfield, the highest point. The Vermont county map names every county and seat; the blank Vermont map removes the capital and cities.
