What the outline shows

The map draws the state boundary and nothing more. The north edge with Idaho is the 42nd parallel. The east edge with Colorado is a meridian at about 109°W. The south edge with Arizona is the 37th parallel. The west edge with Nevada is a meridian at about 114°W. The only interruption is the notch in the northeast where Wyoming's rectangle overlaps: the border steps south along about 111°W, then east along the 41st parallel to the Colorado line. No county lines, the Great Salt Lake or any mountain range is drawn. Press Capital to mark Salt Lake City in the north, just southeast of the lake it is named for, and Abbreviation for "UT".

Portrait or landscape

Utah is about 350 miles from north to south and about 270 miles east to west. Print in portrait. The outline fills the page height and the notch in the top right stays large. Landscape would reduce the map by about a quarter. The Wasatch Range and the state's main valleys run north–south, so features students add will also run up the page. The bottom margin in portrait has room for a short answer list.

Five classroom exercises

1. Draw the Great Salt Lake in the northwest and Utah Lake south of it, with the Jordan River joining them through Salt Lake City.
2. Draw the Colorado River entering from Colorado in the east and flowing southwest to Lake Powell at the Arizona line, with the Green River joining it from the north.
3. Mark the Four Corners point at the southeast corner and name the three other states there.
4. Draw the Wasatch Range as a north–south line along the eastern edge of the Salt Lake valley, and mark Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo and Ogden along its foot.
5. Shade the Colorado Plateau in the southeast and the Great Basin in the west, and mark the five national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, Arches).

How to recognise the Utah outline

• A tall rectangle with a smaller rectangle missing from its top right corner.
• Every edge is a straight line; there are no rivers or coasts on the border.
• The southeast corner is the Four Corners point.
• Often drawn as a mirror image by mistake: the notch is on the right, where Wyoming is.
