What prints

The printed sheet shows Massachusetts from the Berkshire hills at the New York line to the hook of Cape Cod, along with Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket off the south coast. The 14 counties print inside, from Berkshire in the west to Barnstable on the Cape and the two island counties, Dukes and Nantucket. Boston has the capital star at the head of Massachusetts Bay. Turning on Major cities adds Worcester in the centre, Springfield on the Connecticut River, Cambridge across the Charles from Boston, and Lowell on the Merrimack. The coastline, with Boston Harbor, Cape Ann and the curl of the Cape, is the most detailed part of the map, and it stays clean because the map is rendered as vectors. Several counties (Suffolk, Middlesex, Essex) no longer have county governments, but their boundaries are still used and still print.

Page orientation

Massachusetts is about 190 miles from west to east and roughly 50 miles north to south across the mainland, 110 miles including the Cape and islands. It is a clear case for landscape. Landscape stretches the state across the width of Letter or A4 and gives the Cape and islands room at the right edge. In portrait the state is a narrow band with the islands falling near the bottom margin.

What is labeled

County names are not printed. Suggested tasks: shade Barnstable County (all of Cape Cod), find Hampden County by the Springfield dot, and mark the two island counties. Check against the Massachusetts county map. The blank Massachusetts map removes every label.
